It’s important to learn the ins and outs of how your baby is born. A childbirth education course is highly recommended.

Birth plan’s are usually used to navigate hospital care. In midwifery care, there is less of a need for a birth plan since we do many physiological practices (i.e delayed cord clamping) and ask for your consent regarding any procedures (i.e vitamin k administration).

During this trimester, you will review the Gestational Diabetes Testing informed consent. To test for gestational diabetes, we perform a glucose challenge test in which you drink a 50g dose of lemonade and then have your blood drawn an hour later.
The estimated cost is $9 if using Laboratory Assist and doing your blood draw in office.
Because glucose tolerance changes in pregnancy and can affect your baby’s glucose metabolism, this is an important test performed between 24 and 28 weeks. A positive result will help us to tailor your diet to keep you and your baby safe for labor & delivery and thereafter.

Oral Glucose Challenge Test: described in depth in the Gestational Diabetes Testing Informed Consent in your client portal on client care.
Hemoglobin and Hematocrit: After 20 weeks, your blood volume expands. We check your hemoglobin and hematocrit again to ensure that you aren’t anemic and are still safe for an out-of-hospital birth. Through laboratory assist, your estimated cost for this test is $10..
