A journey guided by ancestral wisdom and heartfelt purpose.

Meet Abiana

Washington, DC · Maryland · Northern Virginia

A newborn swaddled in candlelight surrounded by lavender and dried flowers

During my first year in midwifery school, I discovered that my grandmother was an herbalist and midwife in her village in Koalack, Senegal. This revelation affirmed something I had already begun to feel — that midwifery is truly a calling. Not a career I chose, but a path that chose me through generations I never met.

My road here was not straight. I studied nursing at Temple University and developed a deep interest in women's health before realizing the traditional hospital path wasn't where I was meant to be. I studied herbal medicine in DC and then in Costa Rica, where I completed an apprenticeship at Wild Ginger Herbal Center and later took a doula course that changed everything. When I returned to Washington and began attending births at Momease, I knew I had found my work.

In 2019, I enrolled at Midwives College of Utah to pursue my Bachelor of Science in Midwifery. I trained with preceptors across Virginia and Pennsylvania, each one offering a different window into what birth care can look like. In 2024, I passed the NARM exam — and became a Certified Professional Midwife, licensed to attend home births in DC and Maryland.

I am honored to be here. I am honored that families trust me with the most sacred threshold of their lives.
